While this programme is school-based, we understand how important connecting pupils’ school and home lives is when thinking about children’s wellbeing. We’d love for you to have a go at some of our “Try it at Home” series with your children / the children in your care, which will reinforce the class learning at home. The Try It At Home exercises include mindfulness exercises or other simple exercises such as sleep diaries. You can view the mindfulness exercise videos led by Niall Breslin (Bressie) to learn these technique alongside your child.


Lesson 1

This week, pupils explored wellbeing and learned about the factors which impact on our wellbeing, as well as how resilience can help us to deal with challenges in life.

The Try it at Home exercises this week include:

  • Covid-19 Story – pupils will be invited to select feelings from the word brain that represented their experience of Covid-19.
  • Resilience Gym – pupils will be invited to practice a mindfulness exercise led by Niall Breslin called “Square Breathing” at home. You can learn this technique alongside your child at home by viewing the video below.
  • Sleep Diary – pupils will be invited to keep a Sleep Diary at home by recording their sleep for the week.


Lesson 2

This week pupils explored their thoughts and feelings, the connection between how we think, feel, behave and how our thoughts impact our feelings.

The Try it at Home exercises this week include:

  • Resilience Gym – pupils will be invited to practice a mindfulness exercise called “My Selfie Scan” at home.
  • Three Good Things – pupils will be invited think of three good things that happened to them today.


Lesson 3

This week pupils explored strategies for managing thoughts and feelings, getting perspective on a problem, as well as discussing the subjects of positive thoughts, awareness of feelings, and identifying ways in which to build resilience.

The Try it at Home exercises this week include:

  • Resilience Gym – pupils will be invited to practise a mindfulness exercise called My TLC (Tighten, Loosen and Calm) Tool at home.
  • Step Ladder of Fears – pupils will be invited think of something that makes them feel a little afraid and write up a Step Ladder of Fears.


Lesson 4

This week pupils explored the topic of healthy relationships, positive self-talk, different types of relationships trust in relationships and the use of self-compassion.

The Try it at Home exercises this week include:

  • Resilience Gym – pupils will be invited to practice a mindfulness exercise called My Wise Words at Home.
  • My Positive Thought for Tomorrow – pupils will be invited think of a positive thought for tomorrow and to think of this again in the morning when they wake up.


Lesson 5

This week pupils explored the topic of manging relationships, conflict resolution, assertiveness as well as inclusion.

The Try it at Home exercise this week include:

  • Resilience Gym – pupils will be invited to practise a mindfulness exercise called My Mindful Moment at Home.
  • Make a Mindful Moment – pupils will be invited to do one activity every day this week where they focus on what they are doing, for example, eating dinner – bringing their attention to the food they are eating, the smell of the food etc.


Lesson 6

This week pupils explored the topic of a tricky word, the positive and negative influences in a tricky world, making choices, as well as social media and thinking traps.

The Try it at Home exercises this week include:

  • Resilience Gym – pupils will be invited to practice a mindfulness exercise called My Thoughtful Words at home.
  • Talk about it – pupils will be invited to talk at home about a choice they made because they were influenced by others and which wasn’t a good choice for them. Ask them to talk about ways they could have thought differently about the situation
  • Resilience Gym – pupils will be invited to think about the tools they like to practise using most and completing their Resilience App at home.
